1980 Gorham Snowflake Silver Plated Christmas Ornament 11th Edition. In 1980 the price of Silver rose to its all time high of over $48.00 an ounce. Gorham scrambled to find a solution and decided to make the 1980 Gorham Snowflake in silver plated to keep the price in line. Because of this action many early year collectors stopped buying the Gorham Snowflake. The actual number of the 1980 Snowflake produced was greatly reduced. The following years also saw a large falloff until the early 1990 before the number became to climb again.
 
The Gorham Snowflake series is the longest running collection in the business. This first edition is the start of more than 50 years releasing a different snowflake each year. It is Hallmarked Gorham, Sterling, Christmas, Year Date.  The sizes are about 3.5″ High. The Gorham Snowflake series is one of the most collected series in all of the Sterling ornaments.
